Magyan Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Miocene (N1), C1, C1a, C1b, C1c

Province:
Central W Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

Includes in Hisar-Zarafshan ranges, and Obisafit, Turkparidin, Chakykalya typesections

Synonym: Magyansky depression Fm

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

The characterized deposits, according to V.V. Sergeev's data, are represented by red-colored sandstones, gypsiferous claystones, and conglomerates with interlayers of clays and marls. Conglomerates predominate in the lower and upper parts of the section. The thickness reaches 1300 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy_claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The considered deposits lie without apparent discordance on the Shurysay-TajikBasin Fm of the Oligocene

Upper contact

Transgressively overlie conglomerates and terrigenous rocks with ostracods of the Pliocene.

Regional extent

In the southern part of the Turkestan region, the largest ones are exposed in a number of depressions located in the valley of the Zarafshan River

Fossils

In the Magyansky depression, in the characterized deposits, remains of Miocene foraminifers Discorbis? aff. sapinus Krasch., Nonion aff. granosus Orb. and ostracods Cytheridea mulleri (Munst.) (Rubanov, 1968) were found.

Age

Thus, the Miocene age of the described deposits in the Magyansky depression (by their organic remains and position in the section) is established rather definitely.
